Bitter cold sets in next week with subzero wind chills

A few rounds of bitter cold will be on the way over the next week within a more active "clipper" type pattern. Each clipper will bring a chance for light snow showers, followed by a round of bitterly cold air. The coldest air will be overhead between Sunday night and early Tuesday, with surface temperatures remaining in the teens.

The coldest air will be pumped in by a strong Northwest wind, gusting near 30 mph at times. The difference in pressure between strong high pressure over the plains and low pressure across the Great Lakes will be the driver behind these strong winds.

With the coldest air and strong winds around the same time early next week, wind chills will drop quite a bit. Subzero wind chills may be possible as early as Sunday morning, dropping as low as -20° Sunday night into Monday. Cold weather advisories may be needed during this time if confidence remains steady to see -20° chills. It's been about a month since wind chills were this low, so make sure to get those extra layers ready to go! We will subtly warm up a bit through mid-week with chills pushing back above zero by Wednesday.
