First batch of bitter cold, snow chances spill in behind this morning's cold front

Rockford's coldest stretch of the year is here. This is the time where average highs dip below 29° and average lows drop to 14°. It will hold true this time around as multiple shots of Arctic air spill in before Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

A strong cold front will push in from the north during the morning commute hours. With this cold front will also be a batch of gusty and heavy snow showers that may result in slippery travel, low visibility, and winds up to 35 to 40 mph. Travel with caution. Behind the frontal passage, northwest winds will pick up, leaving temperatures in the upper 20s near and after sunrise, then in the low 20s this afternoon.

The worst part will not only be the cold wind but the wind chill values that result. Most, if not all of our Wednesday will be spent with wind chill values in the single digits. Overnight low temperatures will end up seasonable in the low teens. Though winds will ease up this evening, wind chills may briefly drop below zero sometime Thursday morning.

Most of Thursday will be dry, though we can expect clouds to increase as the day progresses as a clipper system dives in from the northwest. Shortly after, the chance for snow will arrive in a scattered fashion Thursday evening, with snow showers continuing into the early stages of Friday.

If traveling Thursday evening or Friday morning, be on the lookout for slick spots.

Similar to Tuesday, this clipper system will help push a pair of cold fronts through. One Friday morning and a second and stronger one Friday night. With Friday night's cold front will also be the chance for scattered snow. The bigger headline of course will be the rush of cold Arctic air that pushes in behind it.

Friday night's cold front will have much colder air spill in behind it, dropping high temperatures to the teens for the weekend. Overnight lows will end up in the single digits. This kind of cold will likely extend into Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Wind chills during this stretch, near or below 0°
