Temperatures have warmed through the 50s Thursday evening following a period of heavier rainfall during the afternoon. Area wide temperatures are in the low to mid 50s, with Rockford's 9pm temperature currently at 56 degrees. At 7pm the temperature warmed to 55 degrees, tying the previous record of 55 set back in 1965. With a temperature of 56 degrees, we have now broken that record! Quite impressive to think that a 'high' temperature record has been broken in January, in the late evening!
Temperatures will remain in the 50s for the next few hours before a cold front sweeps through and brings those numbers down by sunrise Friday. If we remain in the upper 50s through Midnight, it is possible that another record falls - the one for tomorrow, January 9th. The record high temperature is 56 set back in 2002. The only way we could beat or at least tie that record is if we are still at 56 degrees at Midnight.
There are a few showers starting to move into northwest Illinois ahead of the front so it's possible that temperatures may slowly start to drop before Midnight. But if not, then we could be looking at another possible record - this time VERY early in the morning.
