Partial Solar Eclipse this Weekend

A partial solar eclipse is where only the outer ring of the moon's shadow (known as the penumbral shadow) traverses the earth, blocking a portion of the sun.  In southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois the moon will block roughly 60% of the sun.

While we'll only be able to experience a partial solar eclipse, places in the west and southwestern United States will actually experience an annular eclipse.  An annular eclipse is when the moon moves directly between the earth and sun.

Here's a list of times the eclipse would occur around the area:
Rockford:  Eclipse: 7:21 pm  Sunset: 8:16 pm
Freeport:   Eclipse: 7:21 pm  Sunset: 8:19 pm
Rochelle:   Eclipse: 7:22 pm   Sunset: 8:15 pm
Janesville: Eclipse: 7:21 pm  Sunset: 8:17 pm
Monroe:  Eclipse:  7:21 pm  Sunset: 8:20 pm

Unfortunately, with a cold front coming through clouds and rain may limit your ability to view the partial eclipse Sunday.  Remember, you never want to look directly at the eclipse when it occurs.
