Scattered strong to severe storms possible this afternoon

For the third morning in a row, the Stateline is dealing with a little bit of fog. Nothing to the extent where a dense fog advisory is needed, though a few of our southeastern locales are reporting visibility at or below 3 miles. Travel with caution!

The bigger weather headline for today is the potential for strong to severe storms, mainly between the midday and early evening hours. A compact area of low pressure, also known as a Mesoscale Convective Vortex (M.C.V), is shown gliding eastward into southwest Wisconsin, sparking up a few storms along the Illinois-Wisconsin border. With these storms will be the threat for damaging winds and heavy rainfall, followed by a tornado or two. In their most recent outlooks, the Storm Prediction Center left the entire Stateline under a level 2 Slight Risk.

Again, have multiple ways to receive severe watches and warnings. This includes having the First Warn Weather App on your phone!

Once the associated cold front is through, we quiet down but stay mostly cloudy into Thursday. Winds in the low levels of the atmosphere will turn to the northwest at first, then to the northeast, allowing a much cooler air mass to settle in for the remainder of the work week. High temperatures Thursday will run 12 to 15 degrees cooler than today, landing in the low to mid 70s. Friday, more of the same, just a touch warmer with highs in the upper 70s.

Thunderstorm chances will be quick to return over the weekend as the more active storm track is placed over the Western Great Lakes. Storm systems riding over a ridge over the deep south will allow chances to begin late Saturday and last into next week. Temperatures during this stretch will be in the low 80s to start, then climb into upper 80s by Tuesday.
