Tornado watch issued Friday evening for parts of Northern Illinois

A tornado watch has been issued for parts of Northwestern Illinois, including Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Carroll, and Whiteside Counties. This watch will run through 8PM. Additional watches may be possible downstream later this afternoon, but storm development trends will need to be monitored ahead of those potential watches.

As of 1PM, storms have begun developing in Iowa along a remnant low pressure system, very similar to Thursday evening's storms. Storms will gradually move East through the evening tonight. Initial storms may be isolated and pose a higher tornado risk, hence the tornado watch. But gradually, storms will merge into a line or cluster, which will enhance the wind threat.

Storms will likely arrive between 5-6PM, as Futurecast might be a little delayed. This particular model shows the line/cluster of storms very well, which would pose the highest potential for damaging wind gusts. Strongest storms will clear the area after 9-10PM, but scattered weaker storms may persist into the night.

Given the very heavy rainfall and flooding from Thursday, it would not take much for flash flooding to occur on the already saturated ground. Be sure to heed the flash flood warnings as well as any severe thunderstorm warnings that are issued this evening!
