Cooler pattern breaks, temperatures to approach 90° this weekend

Monday was just another example of a perfect late-summer day across northern Illinois. Under lots of sunshine, afternoon highs peaked in the low 70s, breaking a 4 day stretch of 60s.

That temperature climb continues today, landing most locales in the mid to upper 70s. This all occurs under a mix of clouds and sunshine and with the help of a light south to southeasterly wind.

We may see a bit more cloud cover as things wrap up at Food Truck Tuesday as a weak disturbance inches closer from the northwest.

This will also bring the chance for a passing evening and overnight shower or two. Temperatures overnight will end up slightly warmer than this morning, leaving most in the low 50s.

Any chance for a shower should end rather quickly, allowing us to dry out into the afternoon. With winds staying out of the south, that will bring us up a degree or two from today, landing highs close to 80°.  Come Thursday, highs will end up in the low 80s.

This warm up ramps up as we enter the weekend as a ridge of high pressure aloft pushes into the western Great Lakes. With it will come a round of late-summer heat, which will be warm enough to push us into a territory we haven't seen since the mid-portions of August, close to the 90° mark. August 18th to be exact, Rockford came in with a high of 87°. We can expect upper 80s both Friday and Saturday, then low 80s for Sunday and Monday.
