Northern Illinois to see a few more warm days with highs close to 90°

After 22 straight days (August 19th-September 9th) of below average temperatures, the Stateline has seen a nice streak of above-average and summer-like weather the last 6 days.

5 of those days wound up in the 80s. What do we have to thank for that? The blocking pattern going on aloft in the atmosphere. As the saying goes, "nothing lasts forever" and that is a good sentiment on what is going to occur in the upper levels.

The blocking ridge of high pressure will start to break down, allowing rain chances to slowly creep back into the forecast. But that isn't until the weekend so until then, we remain dry and summer-like.

Aside from some patchy morning fog, today will be another sun-filled day with highs in the upper 80s. Overnight lows will continue their downward trend as temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 50s tonight under a few passing clouds. Winds will tilt more to the east for Wednesday, bringing afternoon highs down a smidge. Expect mid 80s under partly cloudy skies. Still, tomorrow's forecast high of 85° is exactly 10° below mid-September standards.

As the ridge aloft breaks down, the jet will slowly sink southward, orienting it in a way where systems track into the Great Lakes region.

From what I gathered, we have two that could bring us scattered rain chances, one with a cold front late Friday and then a secondary one Saturday. Afternoon highs during this stretch won't be as warm, cooling into the upper 70s and low 80s.
