It's been an unusually cool start to September, but the pattern will flip back to a warmer, summer-like feel later this week. Sunday was the 4th day in a row where temperatures failed to reach the 70-degree mark, as Rockford only topped out at 69°. Only 3 other times on record has Rockford seen 4 daytime highs below 70° in the first week of September: 1909, 1939, and 1994. Even counting the first 3 days of the month, it's the 3rd coolest start to September on record!

But we quickly flip the pattern back over the course of the next couple of days. Afternoon highs will reach back to the upper 70s and even low 80s as early as Tuesday/Wednesday, and likely hover near or just above average (78° high) through the end of the week.

This warmer pattern does not come with many opportunities for rainfall. The only chance in the near term is with a weak passing weather system between Tuesday and Wednesday. Better moisture will accompany the showers in Iowa, but drier air to the East will limit the shower coverage locally. Isolated showers may be possible Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning, but likely won't amount to much.

Total rainfall looks to stay under 0.25" for us locally, while those in Iowa, Minnesota, and Northern Wisconsin may get in on some of the meaningful rain. Rockford has only seen 0.08" of rain this month, over 0.8" shy from average totals through the first week.
