Today was the first day of 2012 to hit triple digits. Rockford's official high of 100 today was last seen in July of last year. While we didn't break any records, it didn't matter to anyone who was outside.
Since the forecast is only seeing a minimal cooldown over the coming days (Highs will stay in the 90s through the beginning of next week), it's important to remember what to do to keep yourself safe in the heat.
SLOW DOWN: Try to avoid outdoor activities, especially during the afternoon, where we normally see our hottest temperatures. If you need to go out, try to do so in the morning or later in the evening when the heat packs less of a punch.
LIGHT COLORED CLOTHES: Wearing light, loose fitting clothes can help repel some of the sun's heat and make you more comfortable when the weather turns hot.
PLENTY OF WATER: This is a no brainer. Also try to avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks.
DON'T GET TOO MUCH SUN: Having a sunburn makes it harder for your body to cool off when temperatures soar. If you go out, try to use sunscreen to avoid getting burned.
