High pressure is sitting along the southeastern coast of the USA this evening. A broad southerly flow extends from along the western side of the high westward across the Mississippi Valley and the central and southern plains meeting up with a cold front stretching across the northern plains. It will be clear and warm overnight, and sunny and hot on Sunday. The low tonight will be in the middle 60's, and the afternoon high on Sunday will be at least 93 degrees. There will be a wind from the south tonight and tomorrow. By mid-day on Sunday the wind will be from the south at 15 to 25 mph, and during the afternoon there may be occasional gusts around 30 mph. The cold front will edge a little closer to the Stateline overnight on Sunday The could be some showers approaching the Mississippi River by daybreak on Monday.
On Monday southerly winds will feed in progressively more moist air from the south. However, rich tropical moisture will never reach northern Illinois before the cold front arrives here later in the day. There will be a good chance of showers and thunderstorms in advance of the front, although no widespread heavy rainfall is expected with this system. Rainfall amounts will generally be light to moderate in the .05" to 0.50" range with some isolated heavier amounts possible. Some of the areas corn fields are already showing signs of stress from the lack of rainfall in recent weeks. So, it would be good to get some decent rains. Whatever rain that does occur will come to an end on Monday evening followed by clearing skies overnight. It will be cooler with a low around 60 degrees.
A bubble of Canadian high pressure will take control of Stateline weather on Tuesday bringing a period of very nice weather to northern Illinois. It will be sunny and pleasant on Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the middle 70's. It will be clear at night with great sleeping weather with lows in the middle 50's. The area air conditioners will get a break for a couple of days.
High pressure will shift off to the east by Thursday, but it will remain mostly sunny. Winds will become southerly, and a period of warmer temperatures will commence. Look for highs to reach back in to the low 80's by Thursday afternoon. With a warm front situated to our west over Missouri and Iowa, there is a slight chance that some thunderstorms could get fired up later on Thursday into Thursday night.
The warm front will push northward across the area on Friday pushing temperatures back up into the middle to upper 80's by late afternoon. On Saturday the front will be well north of the Stateline, and a very warm southerly air flow will establish itself bringing hot conditions back to northern Illinois as temperatures rise to around 90 degrees during the afternoon.
