Enjoy the comfortable weather expected this afternoon because once we get passed Tuesday the heat will return. A building ridge of high pressure in the Plains will shift east over the next 48 hours and replace the 70 degree weather in the Midwest with mid to upper 90 degree weather by Thursday.
With the extreme dry weather we've been experiencing this season there isn't a lot of moisture in the ground, or crops, to evaporate back into the atmosphere. This should help keep dew points in check some which should help a little with the humidity. However, the drier ground will allow temperatures to warm quicker than a ground or field that had moisture in it. With temperatures expected to near 100° and higher a few thousand feet above and assuming we can mix that air mass down to the surface that would mean some serious heat for us the middle of the week; especially Thursday. It's possible that there will be a few locations across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin that just may flirt with the century mark. The highest temperature recorded so far this season was back on May 27th when the mercury rose to 99°.
