Another shot of cold Canadian air is on the way

We greet the new work week with the same chill that has been in place since Thanksgiving.

Out the door this morning, most of the lower 48 is waking up in the 20s and 30s, though the Rockford Airport is even cooler than that. Temperatures are in the teens, with a light westerly wind leaving wind chill values in the single digits. Be sure to make it a priority to bundle up this morning.

Cloud cover remains in place for much of the day as flow aloft remains out of the northwest. This will help usher in another weak disturbance that may bring the chance for a few passing flurries. In a similar fashion to this past weekend, afternoon highs will be limited to the upper 20s. High pressure will then slide over the St. Louis area overnight, allowing clouds to decrease into Tuesday. This will help us trend towards a little more sunshine, allowing highs to inch closer towards the freezing mark.

A storm system sliding to our north and northeast will help usher in two cold fronts Wednesday. Ahead of these frontal boundaries, winds will remain out of the southwest, placing highs near the 40° mark. Once the fronts are through, a second dose of bitterly cold air from Canada will spill southward. This will drop afternoon highs back into the mid to upper 20s for Thursday and Friday. Fortunately, this cold stint will be shorter than the current one as a warming trend is set to occur over the weekend.
