This morning's low was the coldest air of the season, reaching 9° just before 7AM. That is the coldest Rockford has been since January 21st, when we fell to -11°! Luckily, we warmed into the 30s this afternoon under more sunshine!
The warmer trends continue into the weekend, where we will see afternoon highs in the 40s Saturday, Sunday, and Monday as a milder air mass settles in overhead. Overnight lows will be above many of our latest *highs*!
The warmer air for the weekend will bring a slim chance for some rain showers, mainly Sunday night into Monday morning. Greatest chances for any showers will be East of I-39, especially into Indiana and Michigan. Many in the Stateline will likely remain dry through the weekend.
Unfortunately, the milder weekend will be followed by another mid-week cool down. A large pocket of cooler air will push through in the Tuesday to Thursday window, pushing afternoon highs back into the 20s and 30s with slim chances for snow flurries. But that will also be short-lived with another surge of milder air by the following weekend.
The milder trends will arrive for most of the country for the middle of the month. The Climate Prediction Center outlook favors a 70-80% chance of above average temperatures between December 14th and 20th. This would mean more frequent highs reaching the 30s and 40s rather than 20s as of late.
