Northwest winds have been increasing on the heels of a strong Arctic cold front moving across the Midwest. Wind gusts over 50 mph have been recorded, with gusts over 55 mph in a few locations. A Wind Advisory remains in effect for the entire viewing area until Midnight as gusts of at least 45-50 mph can be expected through the evening.
The strong winds won't last the entire night, but gusts of 35 mph can be expected overnight. Temperatures did manage to warm near 40 degrees today, but those numbers are quickly falling as the cold air rushes in. Through the evening temperatures will continue to drop down through the 20s, and eventually into the low teens overnight. Wind chills will also tumble through the night, falling as low as -10 degrees early Thursday. High temperatures Thursday will only warm to the low 20s, with chills in the single digits and low teens for much of the afternoon.
Scattered snow showers have also been occurring, with snow squall warnings issued further north in Wisconsin. While the highest forcing aloft will remain north of the state line, wind-whipped snow showers can be expected throughout the evening. This will cause visibility to drop for a time in some locations, especially in the areas that experience the heavier snow bursts.
As the temperatures fall below freezing, any snow that does fall will be capable of sticking. This may cause some slick conditions later tonight.
