We saw a nice change of pace over the weekend as afternoon highs at the Rockford Airport Saturday and Sunday peaked in the mid 50s.
Even with the first of three cold fronts sliding through early in the day, we can expect this weekend's mild weather to carry on into the work week. Clouds will decrease after the frontal passage, allowing afternoon highs to peak in the low 50s.
Northwest flow behind today's cold front will allow the next round of cold air to spill into the western Great Lakes. This will leave afternoon highs in the near the freezing mark Tuesday. A secondary and stronger push of Arctic air occurs Wednesday, leaving highs in the teens and lows in the single digits. With this push will also be the chance for wind-driven flurries and snow showers. Potential for accumulating snow is rather low, though it could combine with the winds and result in reduced visibility.
To make matters worse, a rather potent northwest winds will be in place early Thursday. Wind chills will end up well-below zero, only recovering into the single-digits by Thursday afternoon.
Bundle up in layers! Luckily, this cold snap will be brief as afternoon highs will quickly jump
back to above normal by the weekend.
