Monday flurries ahead of brief mid-week warm up

Welcome to meteorological winter! Seasons are divided by months in the weather field, so December, January, and February mark the winter season. In Rockford, this is our coldest season, with average highs ranging from 29° to 40° from now through the end of February. It is also our snowiest season, with an average of 8-11" of snow each month.

It has certainly felt like winter these last few days, with overnight lows reaching 11° in Rockford two mornings in a row! That has allowed for some ice to begin building up on the rock river. A clear sky initially this evening will allow temperatures to drop quickly into the low teens again. But those numbers will settle a few degrees higher than the last couple of nights with clouds on the rise through the night. Overnight low near 13° in Rockford.

Clouds will filter in ahead of the next weak weather system on the move. This will mainly pass Southwest of our area, keeping light to steady snow showers closer to Iowa/Missouri and Central/Southern Illinois. But locally, we may have just enough moisture to squeeze out some flurries, with little to no accumulation expected. Flurries may be possible through the early afternoon before some afternoon sunshine returns. Temperatures Monday will rise into the upper 20s unless we see clouds stick around longer.

Afternoon highs will near 30° again Tuesday but will be in the upper 30s Wednesday along the leading edge of the next weather system for the middle of the week. This will pass mostly Northeast of us but will bring a brief period of "warmer" weather for the early part of Wednesday. Unfortunately, that will be paired with a strong wind making it feel more like the 20s. And double whammy, another punch of cold air returns Wednesday night, with overnight lows reaching the teens, a 25-30° drop from the afternoon temperatures. Strong winds into Thursday will make it feel near or below zero!
