Strong winds usher in another cold blast mid-week

Just as the cold winds were easing up a bit, they look to return ushering in another cold blast of air mid-week. For the remainder of Monday evening, we'll slowly see the return of cloud cover from the north as temperatures slip back into the teens, to right around 20 degrees. Northwest winds aren't terribly strong but are just enough to bring wind chills into the single digits in a few locations.

As skies turn partly cloudy Tuesday temperatures will warm close to 30 degrees. Still a bit below average but warmer than what we've been the last five days. High pressure moving into the Mid-Atlantic and low pressure moving through Canada will cause southwest winds to increase late Tuesday, gusting around 25 mph Tuesday night.

Wind speeds will increase even further during the day Wednesday as a couple cold fronts move in from the north. The first arrives mid-day, followed by a stronger cold front Wednesday evening. Departing low pressure over the northern Great Lakes followed by a strong incoming high-pressure system will cause northwest winds to increase Wednesday, gusting at least to 35 mph. The strong winds will continue into Thursday before easing as another high-pressure system moves in Thursday night.

Temperatures will begin to warm, but only briefly, Tuesday and Wednesday with the return of southerly winds. However, the stronger winds will likely make it feel a bit cooler during the afternoon. Following high temperatures reaching the upper 30s Wednesday, they'll tumble into the teens Wednesday evening as wind chills fall below zero Thursday morning.
