Spring’s roller coaster continues, more 50s ahead

Much Cooler Tuesday:

The Rockford Airport managed to hit the 80-degree mark for the 5th time this year, continuing a pattern of brief bursts of early-season summer warmth. But that summer-like feel didn't last long.

A quick-moving cold front swept through Monday evening, snatching the warmth almost as fast as it arrived. In its wake, much cooler air has spilled in, leaving morning lows in the upper 40s. With cloud cover and a light northwest wind lingering into the afternoon, there won't be much room for temperatures to climb. Highs should wind up in the upper 50s, landing 22 degrees cooler than yesterday's high temperature. So, if you have any plans such as heading to the first Food Truck Tuesday of the year, wear warmer clothing.

Cool Days Stick Around:

Looking ahead, these cooler-than-average conditions aren't going anywhere unfortunately. A persistent northwest flow both at the surface and higher up in the atmosphere will continue to reinforce this cooler weather pattern, leaving afternoon highs in the upper 50s Wednesday and Thursday. Skies will stay partly to mostly cloudy during this stretch, and with a stout low-level lapse rate (how quick the air temperature changes as you go up in height) and some moisture, an isolated shower or two cannot be ruled out. It won't be until Friday we start to see signs of a warm up again as afternoon highs reach the low 60s, then low 70s on Saturday.
