Temperatures didn't move much throughout the day Monday as most of the Stateline was stuck under cloudy skies. Those clouds were a result of what came down Saturday afternoon, and what's taking place just a few thousand feet above the surface.
Winds near the surface and a few thousand feet above are moving in from the southwest. While this is warming temperatures aloft, near the surface the warming trend is a lot slower due to the recent snow. This sets up what meteorologists refer to as an 'inversion', warmer air above cooler air at the surface. Below the inversion moisture gets trapped, producing the cloud cover and haze/fog we had Monday afternoon. As temperatures continue to warm aloft the inversion will continue to strengthen. This will work to keep the clouds in place through tonight, as well as throughout the day Tuesday. Fog/haze will likely also stick around through Tuesday afternoon. As a result of the clouds, temperatures may not warm much (just like Monday) with highs holding steady in the upper 20s, to right around 30 degrees.
