Officially the high temperature in Rockford reached 32 degrees Tuesday. But that temperature was reached at Midnight. Most of the morning and afternoon temperatures were in the 20s, and that's where temperatures are currently as of 10pm.
Cooler air sticks around Wednesday, but a pattern shift by the end of the week and weekend will push highs back into the 40s, mid 40s for some, with the warmth likely sticking around into next week. Average high this time of year is right around 30 degrees, falling into the upper 20s by next week.
While the warmth in the weeks to follow is a sign of the weak El Niño expected to develop, there are some signs that point to a possible cold snap arriving towards the middle to end of the month. Longer range forecasting has always been a little tricky. After all, you're trying to predict something several weeks, sometimes months, in advance. But a disruption in the upper part of the atmosphere taking place could mean a cold surge of air for parts of North America. It's yet to be seen if this will impact the Midwest or Great Lakes, or remain confined to the Northeast, but definitely something to keep in mind while we enjoy the above average warmth.
