A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for all of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin beginning Tuesday morning and lasting through Tuesday evening. A mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected to fall across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin not only having an impact on the afternoon and evening commute Tuesday, but also expected to accumulate for some.
Low pressure will move out of the Plains and into eastern Iowa by Tuesday morning. Initially Tuesday morning temperatures will be cool enough to support mostly light snow. However, there could be some freezing drizzle that mixes in over parts of northern Illinois. By late Tuesday afternoon and evening warm air is drawn northward into northern Illinois increasing the potential for freezing rain and sleet.
Accumulating snowfall is likely over southern Wisconsin with several inches of snow falling. Snow accumulations will also be possible across far northern and northwest Illinois. Further south a mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow will be likely. Ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch will be possible. However, a longer period of freezing rain or sleet would cut down on snow totals while a shorter period of freezing rain or sleet would increase snow totals.
Light snow will then be possible Tuesday night going into Wednesday morning on the backside of the low. While the forecast is tricky going into Tuesday one thing is for sure, impacts to both the afternoon and evening commutes will be most certain.
