Winter Storm Watches have been issued for all of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin beginning 3pm Friday afternoon, lasting into Saturday afternoon. Accumulating snowfall, some of which could be heavy, will begin to fall across parts of the Stateline as early as 3pm/4pm Friday evening. The snow will move in from the west, shifting across all of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin by 7pm/8pm Friday evening. Light to moderate snowfall is then expected through the late evening and overnight.
The majority of accumulating snow will occur overnight Friday before tapering off Saturday afternoon. Right now it looks like anywhere between 5-7 inches of snow could fall across the area, with locally higher amounts. Those higher totals will be dependent on where exactly smaller scale moderate to heavy snow bands set up during the evening. Right now it looks like those heavier bands will occur along the Highway 20 corridor in northern Illinois.
Within those bands snowfall rates of half an inch, up to an inch, will be possible leading to the higher end of the snow totals. It's also possible that the smaller scale snow band could shift either north or south, depending on how things evolve heading into Friday evening.
While the snow could be significant for some Friday night, increasing northeast winds Saturday will cause the snow to blow and drift
throughout the afternoon and evening. Northeast winds will increase Saturday morning, but gust between 30-35 mph during the afternoon and evening. This means East/West roads will be most impacted, along with open and outlying areas.
High pressure then moves in Sunday afternoon with calming winds and skies turning partly cloudy. However, the cold sets in Sunday with temperatures not making it out of the teens during the afternoon.
