Rain and isolated storms produce heavy downpours Monday evening

Scattered rain and isolated thunderstorms will continue through Monday evening as a few disturbances move along, and north, of a warm front draped across central Illinois.

The severe threat locally remains low but a few of the stronger storms will be capable of producing pea to nickeled sized hail, as well as gusty winds and heavy downpours. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue through the overnight.

Thunderstorm coverage is beginning to increase south of I-88, and this is where the biggest threat for any of the stronger storms will reside. As moisture continues to be pulled north into the Stateline scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms will also continue. There may be a little lull in the activity after Midnight, but rain coverage will increase again Tuesday shortly after sunrise.

Winds will also increase during that time from the

east/northeast, at times gusting to 25 mph. By the afternoon north winds will gusting closer to 30 mph. Colder air will begin to wrap in behind low-pressure Tuesday afternoon bringing temperatures down from the 40s early in the day, into the mid-30s by late afternoon. Rain will then begin to transition over to snow showers by Tuesday evening, with accumulating snowfall likely going into Wednesday morning.
