Visibility, slick travel likely during the morning commute

It didn't take long for Tuesday's changeover to heavy wet snow to cause headaches on the roads, especially in areas west of Rockford.

Travel impacts will continue into our Wednesday as low pressure locked over Lake Michigan will help keep snow chances in place. As a refresher, northern Illinois remains under a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY until noon, 1PM for southern Wisconsin. After brief lull in the snow, heavier bursts are starting to pivot back in from the north.

Underneath these heavier snow bands, visibility will be significantly lower and roads will be quick to become slick or snow-covered.

Use extra caution. Steady snow remains likely into the mid-day hours, mixing with rain and turning more scattered for the afternoon. On top of the snow, winds will ramp up significantly out of the northwest leading to gusts between 35-45 mph. This may further make things complicated for travelers.

All in all, expect additional accumulations to land in the 1"-3" range, with isolated 4" totals more likely north of the IL/WI border.

After a windy and rather December-like Wednesday, we may get in on one more round of showers before our weather pattern dries out. These will shift through during the day Thursday in the form of a scattered mix of rain and snow. Highs return to the low 40s, then to the upper 40s Friday.
