Alex Update

Alex is still "just" a tropical storm as of this writing, but barely. With maximum sustained winds of 70mph, it only needs to obtain another 4mph in wind strength to be at hurricane status. Further, it's minimum central pressure continues to drop, and is now at 28.94". Falling pressures inside a tropical system is usually a sign that the system is getting better-organized. It is now located about 265 miles to the southeast of Brownsville, TX and is moving west-northwest at 12mph. At its present movement, it will likely make landfall on the northern Mexican Gulf coast. South Texas, however, could still see hurricane force winds and a significant storm surge with Alex since the strongest winds and highest surf are usually found on the north side of hurricanes.    --TS
