Bitterly cold air, sub-zero winds chills for a few more days

For the second night in a row, much of the Stateline will be under a Cold Weather Advisory (previously referred to as Wind Chill Advisory). These are issued when wind chills are expected to be down near -20° as they will be again tonight. Carroll and Whiteside county are not under the advisory tonight with less confidence of -20° chills.

The air temperature will likely fall below zero overnight with wind chills remaining between -15° to -20° through the night. Be sure to bundle up if you must go outside!

Temperatures tomorrow will only rebound to the upper single digits again, very similar to Sunday's temperatures. It will remain cold and blustery, with wind chills likely only reaching around -10° at the highest. We may see a few flurries during the afternoon and evening, but no accumulation is expected despite cold surface temperatures.

Another round of bitterly cold wind chills will arrive Monday night/Tuesday morning, with the potential for a few spots to see chills near or below -30°. Air temperatures will be around -8° for the overnight low, meaning even a small breeze can push chills even lower. There is already a cold weather advisory in place for this time period across much of the Stateline, with additional headlines expected if forecast chills remain this low.

As cold as it is, it could be much worse! Typically the air mass in place overhead is capable of producing air temperatures near -10° to -20° without the wind chill factored in. But that is normally with more snow on the ground. Given the lack of snow cover we have this year, this cold blast is not nearly as cold. Just last year, a similar air mass moved overhead with low temperatures in the teens below zero for 3 straight nights between January 14-16, 2024. This came immediately after a fresh 7" of snowfall on the 12th, helping promote better surface cooling overnight. This time around, our lowest air temperature will only be around -10° despite a cooler air mass overhead compared to last year.

We will see wind chill likely remain below zero through at least Wednesday morning. Air temperatures will rise from near zero Wednesday morning to around 20° by the afternoon. We may also see our next round of snow showers Wednesday into Thursday.
