Subzero wind chills on the way for Northern Illinois

A passing cold front Sunday brought a period of drizzle and some snow flurries to portions of the Stateline Sunday morning and afternoon. Into the evening, that front has progressed to the Southeast. In its wake, a few areas of flurries may be possible through 12-1AM or so, especially across Southern Wisconsin.

Also behind the cold front has been a large drop in temperatures. We are down in the mid-20s at 6PM with wind chills in the low teens or single digits. Both numbers will continue to fall tonight, with temperatures reaching near single digits for some, while wind chills could be around 5 below zero. Tomorrow afternoon, those wind chills will only climb back barely above zero, while high temperatures reach the mid/upper teens.

This shot of Arctic air will pack a punch for a couple of days, with highs in the teens and lows in the single digits through Tuesday. But mid-week there will be another warm-up with highs back in the 20s Wednesday and 30s and even near 40° for some Thursday and Friday.

That milder air will be equally short-lived with a very high confidence in the return of below average temperatures for the middle of the month. This outlook from the Climate Prediction Center (https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/) shows between 80-90% chance most of the Central U.S. will see below average temperatures between the 18th-22nd. The start of this cold stretch will arrive sometime next weekend and could bring a chance for snow along with it depending on placement of the moisture when the cold air arrives. Stay tuned for that part of the forecast through this week!
