Light snow is set to return Wednesday as a quick moving storm system passes through the Midwest and Great Lakes.
There remain a few flurries and light snow showers southeast of Rockford Monday evening as an upper-level disturbance moves across the Great Lakes. As that clears the region skies will turn partly cloudy allowing overnight lows to fall between -5- and -12-degrees Tuesday morning. Wind chills will drop as low as -30 during that time, only rising to -15 to -20 during the afternoon.
Northwest winds will turn to the southwest Tuesday night as high pressure slips to our southeast. A slow return of moisture will lead to a little more cloud cover which will cause temperatures to slowly rise into Wednesday morning. It won't be warm by any means, but at least we'll start the day above zero.
Light snow will begin to move in Wednesday morning but may take a while to reach the surface due to dry air initially. Increased forcing in the atmosphere, though, should allow the light snow to reach the ground throughout the day leading to minor accumulations by Wednesday evening.
Totals won't be much, most likely an inch or less, but with temperatures in the 20s anything that does come down will stick and create hazardous travel conditions during that time. A few flurries could linger into Thursday with temperatures staying in the mid-20s.
