Wind chills across northern Illinois could be as low as -25°

Welcome to the Jungle? More like welcome to the Arctic Circle. Arctic air spilled into the Stateline over the weekend, dropping us from record warmth Friday to below zero this morning. Punching that into the calculator, that is a 42-degree difference.

A Cold Weather Advisory (formerly known as Wind Chill Advisory) is in place area-wide until noon. At times this morning, wind chill values could be as low as -25°, which does equate to frostbite in 20 to 30 minutes. If you are not off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and have to be outside, pack on those layers and cover all exposed skin to protect yourself.

We get a brief break from the dangerous cold after the expiration of the Cold Weather Advisory. Afternoon highs only make it back to the single digits, with wind chills staying below the zero mark.

Along with this afternoon's bitter cold does come the chance for a few flurries. The flurries won't amount to any accumulations, but could make for lower visibility while traveling. The core of this Arctic blast arrives overnight as skies clear. A second Cold Weather Advisory will be in place from 9PM this evening until Tuesday, Wind chills will likely be between -25° and -30°, which would equate to frostbite within 15 to 20 minutes. Take similar precautions to that of this morning. The rest of Tuesday features more sunshine than clouds, though temperatures barely make it above 0.

We FINALLY see this Arctic air push out by the middle of the work week. High temperatures climb back into the mid 20s, though there will be another chance for flurries Wednesday.
