Temperatures fall ahead of light snow Monday night

High temperatures Monday afternoon struggled to warm above 20 degrees, some 10 degrees below the normal for mid-January. Even with the sunshine the chill was felt as wind chills remained on either side of 0 degrees for most of the day.

Skies will stay clear through the evening, but cloud cover is expected to increase as a weak upper-level disturbance passes us to the west. Temperatures will hold steady once the cloud cover moves in before dropping into the single digits right around sunrise Tuesday. Light snow flurries, and even snow showers, will occur after 3am/4am Tuesday as the system slips into central Illinois.

Temperatures in the teens during that time will allow anything that falls - even if light - to stick right away on surfaces. This will create some slick conditions through the Tuesday morning commute. The clouds will clear, along with the threat for any snow, shortly after sunrise.

The clearing sky will also be followed by a period of increasing northwest winds gusting around 25 mph. This will help push wind chills around -10 degrees, to perhaps -15 degrees, in some locations. Mostly sunny skies can then be expected for the remainder of Tuesday, but it'll be cold with highs only in the upper teens once again.
