Colder and drier heading into next week

So far in January we've been in a pretty normal pattern in terms of temperature with even a majority of the days to start the month below average which is a complete turnaround since December which was one of the warmest on record! Although precipitation totals continue to stay below average even colder temperatures look to arrive next week.

With another shift in the jet stream comes more northwest flow from Canada down into the Central United States. This will bring colder and drier air back down into the region which will continue to limit our precipitation chances but will drop temperatures to some of the lowest recorded this winter. Towards the later portions of next week though multiple clipper systems may bring some snowfall as temperatures warm.

During the morning hours on Monday and Tuesday is when temperatures look to drop the most. Single digits will be likely during the morning hours so make sure to bundle up during that time! As well with strong low-level winds in the atmosphere, some breezy conditions will translate down to the surface causing wind chills to drop below 0 degrees. Limit any outdoor activity during the morning hours to start the week as wind chills may drop near -10 degrees Fahrenheit during that time.
Comparing this blast of artic air to normal temperatures for this time in January we will be significantly cooler. Once again, the thing to look out for the next few days will be the blustery and cold conditions especially towards the morning hours when we normally hit our low temperature. The good news is that by Wednesday night one of the previously mentioned clipper systems will move into the Midwest helping bump up temperatures and bring another chance for some snowfall.
