Skies were filled with plenty of sunshine Tuesday afternoon, but the sun was no match for the arctic air mass in place. Afternoon temperatures only warmed into the mid-teens, with a high of 16 in Rockford. Winds chills through most of the afternoon remained below zero, only warming above zero during the late afternoon. Skies will remain clear Tuesday night as high pressure slips into southern Illinois and Indiana. Winds won't turn completely calm as we hold on to a light breeze from the southwest. But the very dry air mass in place, along with the clear sky and lighter wind, will allow lows to fall close to zero. A few locations could even drop below zero. If Rockford does fall below zero it'll be the first time the overnight low temperature has done so, so far this winter season. Wind chills could be as low as -10 Wednesday morning.
Winds will increase from the southwest Wednesday afternoon which will bring temperatures into the low 20s, but wind chills will remain in the single digits. Cloud cover increases through the afternoon with the chance for a few more light snow showers Wednesday evening. Another dusting up to a few tenths of an inch will be possible.
