Cold Weather Advisory in effect Monday night as wind chills tumble

The snow has ended and now it's time for the cold to settle in. A Cold Weather Advisory will go into effect area wide beginning at 9pm Monday, lasting through Noon Tuesday. At their lowest point wind chills are expected to fall between -25 and -30 degrees under partly cloudy skies. Frostbite can occur in under 30 minutes with these types of chills.

The sunshine we had from earlier in the day has now been replaced by cloud cover as a storm system passes us to the south. It is currently bringing light snow and flurries from the central Plains into the Midwest. A bigger storm system will move in behind this one Tuesday with accumulating snow expected well south of the viewing area Tuesday into Tuesday night.

The cold is in response to an extremely strong Arctic high pressure system stretching through central Saskatchewan, Canada. Underneath the high an extremely cold air mass is in place that'll follow the high as it moves into the Plains Tuesday and Wednesday. For the Stateline, the center of the high will remain displaced to our west which keeps us out of the coldest air mass but also holds on to a chilly northwest breeze the next few days. Because of this wind chills are expected to fall, despite some of the cloud cover we have overhead currently.

The coldest chills Tuesday morning will occur between 3am/4am - 8am. This is when wind chills will likely range between -25 to -30. It's possible that there could be some spots that briefly dip below -30, but those types of wind chills are not expected to last for any extended amount of time.

Through mid-morning Tuesday wind chills will remain around -15, warming only to -5 to -10 during the afternoon. Tuesday night/Wednesday

morning wind chills will dip between -10 to -20, and then back between -5 to -10 Wednesday afternoon. We will slowly begin to warm out of the ice box by the weekend when temperatures will warm back near normal, into the mid and upper 30s.
