To reiterate how disappointing this winter season has been, the Rockford Airport's top 5 highest daily snow totals all sit below the 2.0" mark. The highest, 1.9" back on the 18th of December.
Well, snow-lovers, I'm here to say this may be your week as the Stateline could not one, not two, but three opportunities for accumulating snow. The first arrives late tonight into mid-morning Tuesday in the form of scattered light
snow and flurries. Any accumulations will be light, likely staying under 0.5". But a much broader storm system will arrive Wednesday into the early stages of Thursday, bringing the potential for
accumulating snowfall.
Temperature profiles will be cold enough for snow, so mixed precipitation won't be an issue. Dry air with an area of high pressure to the north may be one limiting factor into how much we see.
With that being said, the potential for 4" of snow or more has been increasing with as we get closer to the day of the event. All Rockford has to do is pick up anything over 2.0" and that would be the largest snowfall of the season thus far.
The highest amounts continue to be confined to areas south of I-80, stretching into Michigan. There may be some lake-effect snow that enhances totals along the Chicago portion of the Lake Michigan. Not a done deal as the forecast has wiggle room to change. So stay tuned for further updates. So far, the National Weather Service has placed almost all of Kansas, the northern half of Missouri, and a chunk of southeast Iowa under a Winter Storm Watch. I'm sure as today and tonight progress, more of the Midwest will be under winter weather alerts.
