The
first significant snowfall of the 2024-2025 winter season is in the books. The highest totals occurred west of Rockford, from 10" in Freeport to 9.0" in Elizabeth to 7.5" in Lena. Rockford was towards the bottom of the list, picking up 3.2".
Though all winter weather alerts have been cancelled, expect travel
impacts to linger. If traveling, us extra caution as there will be slick
spots, snow-covered and untreated roads this morning. Weather-wise,
Thursday begins with overcast skies, though cloud cover is expected to
clear quickly after sunrise. This will leave us with plenty of sun for
the afternoon. Despite that, the fresh snow along with a cold
northwesterly wind will limit highs to the upper teens. This will also
keep wind chills near or below zero.
Colder conditions settle into Friday. High pressure to our south will allow the radiational cooling process to be more effective, landing lows a few degrees below zero. With a light wind present, expect wind chills to end up closer to -10-degrees. Fortunately, the bitterly cold start doesn't pave the way to another bitterly cold afternoon as southwest winds take over. This will bring us into the mid to upper 20s ahead of our next chance for snow Friday evening.
