Light wintry mix with more freezing drizzle possible Saturday

Our next winter weather system will arrive Saturday, bringing the potential for a light wintry mix, including freezing drizzle again. While this system will bring less overall moisture than the freezing rain from Wednesday, even a small amount of ice can cause headaches with slick roadways and sidewalks possible. We may see some light snow mix in toward the afternoon/evening, but even those seeing snow all day can expect only light accumulations.

Futurecast depicts the steadiest of the snow (blue) in Wisconsin, while freezing drizzle or mix (pink) may be most likely across Northern Illinois. Expect light precipitation to begin around 8/9AM with temperatures in the mid-20s. This will allow anything that comes down to stick on untreated surfaces.

The system will continue to bring light precipitation on and off through the middle of the day, with some snow mixing in along the backside by mid-afternoon or early evening. All told, those in Northern Illinois can expect a glaze (up to 0.05") of ice, while near and North of the IL/WI state line may see up to 0.5" of snow accumulation. While those amounts are not quite enough to trigger winter weather advisories, be on the lookout for slick spots throughout the day tomorrow! There is a chance for drier air to win over, limiting precipitation that falls throughout the day. If this occurs, slick spots will be limited.

Temperatures will be hovering near or below freezing throughout the day, allowing for those slick spots to develop. Mid-morning will bring the potential for freezing drizzle, followed by some snow mixing in by the afternoon or evening. Drier air will filter in, winding down the precipitation through the evening hours as temperatures return back to the teens Saturday night.
