Winter Weather Advisory issued for freezing rain and slippery travel

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for all of northern Illinois ahead of this evening's potential for freezing rain and slippery travel.

This advisory is set to begin Wednesday evening and last intoThursday morning. For Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, Lee, McHenry, and DeKalb counties, the advisory will run from 6PM Wednesday to 9AM Thursday. For Stephenson, Jo-Daviess, Carroll, and Whiteside Counties, the advisory will run from 6PM until midnight.

A weak area of low-pressure will help push warmer air in from the south, but temperatures at the surface will remain below freezing throughout most of the afternoon. This will allow precipitation to begin as scattered light snow showers, though a transition to a wintry mix (snow, sleet, and freezing rain) once the warmer air aloft finally filters in.

From there, temperatures will continue to warm aloft which will allow some light freezing rain and drizzle to mix in through the evening, lasting into the first few hours of Thursday morning. Any accumulations will be light, but just enough to cause a few headaches and issues on the roads. A glaze up to a tenth of an inch will be possible across most of the viewing area, with a small chance for slightly higher amounts in our far southern counties.
