Northern Illinois likely to see -25° wind chills multiple times this week

Layers, layers, layers! That will be the main priority this week as Arctic air returns. A Cold Weather Advisory is in place area wide until 11AM this morning. Wind chills until the expiration of this advisory could be as low as -25°.

Little to no relief arrives this afternoon as winds remain gusty out of the northwest. This will keep wind chills closer to -10 degrees with afternoon highs peaking in the upper single digits.

The worst of the Arctic cold is scheduled is arrive overnight into Tuesday. For this, the entire area will be under another Cold Weather Advisory from 9PM this evening to 12PM Tuesday. Temperatures under a partly cloudy sky will fall to close to -10°. Combine this with winds between 10 to 15 mph and you get wind chills will be as cold as -30°. Frostbite in this type of cold occur within 20 to 25 minutes so make sure to limit time outdoors or cover all exposed skin, wear gloves and dress in layers.

Similar to Monday, wind chill values will remain below zero for the entire day, with afternoon highs reaching the upper single digits. Clouds increase into Wednesday as a disturbance slides overhead. Along with the cold, this may bring the chance for a few flurries. On a somewhat positive note, afternoon highs reach double digit territory, climbing further away from the 10° mark as we get into the weekend. Expect afternoon highs in the upper teens Thursday and Friday, the low 20s Saturday.
