Extended period of sub-zero wind chills expected this week

Temperatures on Sunday reached the 20s, but much cooler air has already begun setting in. This will eventually push temperatures below zero overnight. The fresh snowpack paired with an incoming arctic air mass will allow temperatures to drop below zero for many, with winds remaining strong from the Northwest.

Our wind chills could approach -15° to -20° overnight, possibly up to 15° difference from the air temperature with winds remaining 10-15 mph from the Northwest. A cold weather advisory will go into effect near midnight for the entire Stateline for the potential wind chills near -15° to -20°. The advisory will run until about noon Monday, as chills rise "up" to around -5° or -10°.

The following night could be even colder with the overnight lows reaching -10° or so, with wind chills approaching -25° or -30° at times. An EXTREME COLD WATCH will go into effect for Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Carroll, and Whiteside counties Monday night into Tuesday morning. The remaining counties could have that watch extended, or see another cold weather advisory issued, depending on confidence of reaching a wind chill of -30°.

Air temperatures will likely not reach the 20-degree mark until next weekend, with wind chills remaining near or below zero through at least Wednesday. We may see a few light snow showers Tuesday night into Wednesday. Those snow showers could provide travel impacts because salt will be largely ineffective due to the cold air mass in place. Overnight lows will hover near or below zero through the latter half of the week.
