Wintry mix and slick roads possible this afternoon

As our snow total continues to dive below average for not only this month, but this entire year one may think that this has been a pretty mild winter all and all. That is true besides for a few frigid cold days this year which has made this one of the driest winters on record. Through the week though, we've been tracking two separate winter systems, the one that arrived Wednesday bringing freezing rain and the other arriving today with another chance for a wintry mix.

This morning we'll remain with mostly cloudy skies as the system from the west quickly approaches. As of now the system looks to arrive around 11 a.m. this afternoon bringing the chances for some snowfall and freezing drizzle bringing once again slick road conditions. We won't get above freezing today though, so anything on the ground may not melt right away.

The main issue with the approaching system today will be some mid-level dry air that will be present preventing heavy precipitation. Comparing two separate models you can see where exactly the dry air sets up centering itself right over the state line. This makes forecasting this system a bit tricky as it's hard to tell how potent this dry air will be when inhibiting our precipitation chances. Either way with the rain snow line setting up just to the south of us today, any precipitation that does fall will be light, as of now the likely outcome seems to be some freezing drizzle.
Because of this, the National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Advisories for a few portions of the state line for the chance of some accumulating freezing drizzle. Throughout the afternoon, accumulation looks to stay below 0.05 inches of freezing rain however even with such low totals, conditions on roadways and untreated surfaces will still be slick for a few hours of the day so drive with caution.
Slick spots and decreased driving conditions will last into the evening hours as well. As cool temperatures and a little bit more moisture wrap around on the backside of the low-pressure system some snowfall looks possible. The main thing through today will be to stay off roadways or drive with extreme caution as with freezing drizzle black ice will be possible today.
Those snow showers begin to wrap around the backside around 4 p.m. this afternoon which will carry a bit lower of widespread chance compared to the afternoon's freezing drizzle. Beyond this though as we move into tonight and into tomorrow surface high pressure begins to build behind this system keeping us cooler and dry the next few days.
