Cloud cover remains thick across the region as temperatures have gradually warmed into the upper 20s and low 30s Wednesday afternoon. Following a band of light snow showers that moved through the region earlier in the day, although very little of that actually made it to the surface, conditions will remain cloudy for the rest of the afternoon and early evening. Temperatures may try to warm another degree or two but should hold steady, if not drop some, through the evening.
A thick blanket of fog covers parts of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri as moisture begins to lift in from the south. Within the low deck of clouds light freezing drizzle may be occurring as temperatures sit below freezing, especially over parts of Iowa.
Throughout the next few hours moisture will increase as an upper-level disturbance lifts northeast from Iowa. As it approaches the Stateline, we'll begin to see an increase in both fog and freezing drizzle. This is set to move in after the 6pm/7pm hour and last through much of the evening and early overnight. A period of light freezing rain may also occur late in the evening before switching back over to freezing drizzle.
Slick and hazardous travel can be expected with the biggest impacts occurring on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Sidewalks and parking lots will also become slick with a light glaze of ice forming. Ice accumulations will range from a glaze up to a few hundredths of an inch, with a few isolated locations possibly reaching close to a tenth of an inch.
