Today's heat however comes with two opportunities for rainfall, one during the early morning hours and one during the afternoon and evening. The one slated for this afternoon will accompany the cold front as it slides through the Stateline.
Most of the thunderstorms that develop along it will be non-severe, though a severe thunderstorm or two cannot be ruled out. If any storm were to become severe, damaging winds would be the primary concern along with heavy downpours. Forecast models do show a few storms carrying on into the first few hours of the night, with overnight lows falling into the upper 60s and low 70s.
We'll see a very similar scenario play out as we make the seasonal transition to summer on Thursday. For those wondering, the summer solstice will occur at 3:50PM CDT. This is when the earth's tilt toward the sun is at its maximum and when the sun's rays are focused on the Tropic of Cancer. High temperatures however will fall short of the 90-degree mark by a degree or two. Temperatures overnight lows will once again bottom out in the upper 60s.
Southwest flow kicks back up Friday, allowing highs to climb back into the low 90s. Saturday provides one more hot and humid day before a secondary and stronger cold front cools us back into the 80s.
This cold front will also bring back the chance for scattered showers and storms, mainly during the evening to overnight hours.
