Ring of Fire pattern brings warmer temperatures and thunderstorm chances

Warmer temperatures will return this weekend into early next week along with isolated storm chances. A ridge is positioned over the Midwest region allowing warmer temperatures to move northward into the region The ridge in place is a common summer type pattern also known as a "Ring of Fire" pattern where high pressure positioned over the Southeastern United States allows southerly surface winds to funnel warmer temperatures northward into the Midwest region. The ridge created by this high-pressure system can also cause isolated thunderstorms to move in with the warmer temperatures based on the position of the upper-level winds.

Thunderstorm chances with a ridge in place are all determined by where the ridge sets up next week. Areas where upper-level winds are enhanced are often areas of concern for the development of thunderstorms. Looking into the ridge position for this weekend a more curved jet stream will allow warmer temperatures reaching the low 90's to move into our area.

If the jet stream of the ridge begins to flatten out however temperatures can cool with this pattern, storm chances begin to rise. With this flattening pattern stronger upper-level winds become positioned over the Midwest allowing for an environment more favorable for thunderstorm development. Through the weekend and next week, the ridge flattens out bringing in not only cooler temperatures but higher thunderstorm chances as well. However, through the weekend with the current position of high pressure expect warm temperatures to continue to increase
