Severe thunderstorm potential this evening

The heat sticks around today along with more humidity helping fuel thunderstorm potential this evening. Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop tonight near and south of I88. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe thunderstorm watch this evening including Whiteside County until 10 p.m. tonight.

Currently scattered showers are impacting parts of Northern Illinois however the main thunderstorm threats are concentrated in Eastern Michigan as well as Southeastern Iowa and Northeast Missouri where numerous severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued. Thunderstorms now are concentrated well south of the state line however some isolated thunderstorm potential is still in effect for Northern Illinois later.

Storms currently are being driven by convergence in the wind fields however as the night goes on a cold front will sweep through the area driving thunderstorm potential later tonight. Through this evening thunderstorm potential rises further south near I88 and areas southward. The Storm Prediction Center currently has most of Northern Illinois in a slight risk with hazards including damaging wind gusts and large hail. Some areas further southwest including parts of Whiteside and Lee Counties are under an enhanced risk for the same hazards so these areas will have higher severe potential. As the night moves through thunderstorms will move further south out of the area with Friday bringing a calmer day.
