The cloud cover was slow to clear for some Wednesday morning but once it did, we were greeted with plenty of sunshine for the afternoon. A breezy west wind bumped temperatures into the upper 70s and low 80s, with Rockford's 5pm temperature reaching 81 degrees.
To the west a cold front is currently moving through Iowa and will pass through southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois Wednesday night. Ahead of the front, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms have developed. Coverage has become a little more widespread across eastern Iowa over the last hour.
As the front nears northwest Illinois rain will begin to overspread the region from west to east. Severe weather isn't expected but an increasing wind may occur with some of the stronger showers through sunset. Especially if the heavier rain is able to tap into some of the stronger winds aloft. Instability isn't all that high but an isolated storm or two can't be ruled out. Most of the rain activity will be passing to our east after Midnight with drying skies heading into Thursday morning.
Temperatures Wednesday night will fall to around 58 degrees with Thursday's high warming into the low to mid 70s. Sunshine will return for Thursday but so does the wind. Northwest winds will gust as high as 35 mph throughout the afternoon, with a few locations peaking close to 40 mph. We'll see a few afternoon clouds build back in with a chance for a spotty sprinkle or shower late in the afternoon.
