Dangerous heat and humidity on the way this weekend

Our first wave of summertime heat will arrive this weekend, as our upper air pattern will develop a large-scale ridge of high pressure across the Eastern United States. This will help to push lots of hot and humid air our direction starting this weekend.

Afternoon high temperatures will surge well into the 90s Saturday through Monday, pushing heat index values near the triple digits each day. How hot each afternoon high temperature gets depends partially on where dew point temperatures reach each day. Higher humidity means higher heat index, but lower air temperature. Conversely, if we mix out some of that humidity, the drier air will heat up quicker, possibly pushing a few spots into the upper 90s.

Regardless of where temperatures and heat index values end up, it will be approaching dangerous levels of heat and humidity. So be sure to stay hydrated if you plan to be outdoors for extended periods of time this weekend!

Eventually the ridge of high pressure will begin to break down for the middle of the week. Once it does, higher coverage of showers and thunderstorms will break down for the middle of the week. Once it does, higher coverage of showers and thunderstorms will be possible. Right now, that appears most likely Tuesday into Wednesday.
