Temperatures Sunday afternoon were a few degrees warmer than Saturday, but the sun was once again muted by the haze and smoke. While a few higher-level clouds have moved in across northwest Illinois, most of what we see in the sky is the smoke. Those smokey and hazy skies will continue Sunday night, and likely carry over into Monday as well.
Our surface winds will turn to the southwest Monday, but winds aloft (jet stream winds) will remain from the northwest. This will continue to pull in the smoke from Canada. And unlike the last couple of days where the smoke has remained more aloft, mixing throughout the atmosphere Monday could bring the smoke down near the surface. This would not only impact our air quality, but you may also notice more of a smokey smell during the afternoon. It's still a little unclear as to how much mixing will take place, but it could get a little more hazy and smokey Monday.
Temperatures will warm into the 80s, and perhaps upper 80s assuming the smoke doesn't filter out too much of the sun. Conditions will remain dry but the chance for rain will return Tuesday evening, along with the a few thunderstorms.
