One of them is used for outdoor warning purposes ONLY and that is a tornado siren. We hear tornado sirens blare on the first Tuesday of every month as part of a statewide test and more frequently during the spring and summer months. In actuality, these sirens could go off at any point in the year.
Tornado sirens are activated by city or county officials and are an indication that you need to get indoors and seek additional information via weather radio, local news, or through your cell phone. It's also important to remember that the threat ISN'T over when the sirens stop sounding. Remain in your shelter (basement, interior room, or an above/below ground storm shelter) until told otherwise or when the warning has been cancelled.
