The National Weather Service has expanded the Winter Weather Advisory into northern Illinois to include Stephenson, Jo-Daviess, and Carroll counties. This advisory will be in place until 3PM.
Snow has started to fall this morning,
though the heaviest remains west of the Mississippi River prior to the
morning commute.
Light to moderate snow will overspread the region by mid-morning, with light snow remaining likely for a good chunk of the daylight hours.
Be sure to give yourself extra travel time throughout the day. With temperatures landing a few degrees above the freezing mark (32°) this afternoon, we may see a scattered light mix of rain and snow before this event wraps up during the evening.
As we've previously discussed, there are a lot of factors into why today's snowfall won't bring notable accumulations to the Stateline...
1. The wet nature of the snow
2. Temperatures near/above freezing,
3. The late-winter sun angle
4. Happening during the day
I do think most will end up with .5" to 1.5" with the higher totals closer to 2" in the areas under the Winter Weather Advisory. Areas to the south of highway 20 won't see as much snow as they will be fighting the rain/snow mix line for a good portion of the event. Skies quickly clear following the departure of today's disturbance, allowing temperatures to fall into the low 20s by Saturday morning.
